Marble Falls baseball beats Lago Vista to stay unbeaten in district play
The Marble Falls High School baseball team beat Lago Vista 7-3 March 16 to go to 3-0 in District 24-4A play.
That sets up a showdown against Burnet (3-0) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, at Bulldog Diamonds. Only the varsities are scheduled to play.
“To go over there (to Lago Vista) and win is a good feeling,” head coach Tyler Porter said. “Win or lose (against Burnet), there’s 11 more district games to play. Our kids know each other, and it’s fun.”
Both teams plated a run in the first inning and the Mustangs added another — a solo home run by Evan Nickowski — in the third for a 2-1 advantage. They added three more in the fifth thanks to a three-run homer by Isaias Roman, while the Vikings (1-2) answered with two runs of their own to trim the deficit to 5-3. The Mustangs scored twice more in the seventh.
“Evan has been the guy for us all year. He hit his to right field,” Porter said. “Roman started getting quality at-bats. Getting him in the swing of things is huge. Both came at critical times.”
Roman had 3 RBIs, while Cale Cochran had 2 off 2 hits and Jake Carter added 1 off 2 hits.
Pitcher Cale Cochran (1-0, 1 save) picked up the win with 8 strikeouts in seven innings.
“He was around the strike zone,” Porter said. “As long as he’s around the strike zone, we were fine. As long as he kept doing that, we were going to keep him there. Defensively we played well behind him. This was the best he’s thrown.”
The first round of district play concludes this week, and the Mustangs’ hard work and commitment has gotten them to this point. Now it’s a matter of continuing to do what they’ve been doing, the coach said.
“They played well, and we have to keep working,” he said.
